Volunteers Sought for Income Tax Assistance

VERO BEACH — United Way of Indian River County has a need for people to provide free tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA is available to low-to-moderate-income individuals and families earning less than about $52,000 a year.

VITA volunteers do more than just prepare people’s taxes. They play a critical role in ensuring that low-income workers access valuable tax credits without paying any fees.

Benefits of becoming a VITA volunteer include: free IRS training and materials to help develop a lifelong skill and build a resume; a variety of locations, dates and times convenient to any schedule; ongoing support; Continuing Education Credits for eligible volunteers, a Certificate of Recognition and Letter of Appreciation from the IRS at the end of the tax season; and the personal satisfaction gained from providing an important service to the community.

No accounting experience is required. Tax software guides every step of the way and volunteers are protected under the Volunteer Protection Act.

Volunteers can start training on-line in November and in-class training in Indian River County will be held in December and January. Certification will be attained online. Certified volunteers will be required to commit to at least one half-day per week from mid-January through April 15, 2015. If you would like to volunteer please call (772) 567-8900 ext. 20 or sign up on the Get Connected website www.volunteerindianrivercounty.org.
