INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 17-year-old boy died after being shot in the parking lot of Garcia Boat Ramp late Friday, deputies said. Sheriff’s officials were investigating the incident as a homicide, said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public,” sheriff’s official said in a statement.

Deputies responded to reports of a juvenile shot about 11:24 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at Garcia Boat Ramp, located north of State Road 60 and west of Interstate 95. Deputies found the wounded teen and tried to revive him until Indian River County Fire Rescue crews arrived.

The teen was taken by ambulance to Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital and later flown to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where doctors pronounced him dead, Jaworski said.

Detectives combed the area for evidence and spoke with several witnesses.

“We ask that anyone in the community with information about this incident please call the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office at 772-569-6700 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS,” sheriff’s officials said.

The investigation remains active.
