Celebrate family history month

VERO BEACH — October is Family History Month and members of the Indian River Genealogical Society invite you to celebrate as you learn to preserve your family’s heritage.  The society’s Tuesday, Oct. 13 meeting will feature a program entitled “Beyond the Family Photo Album”.  Members Lola Sloan and Susan Rienzo will show you how to use your family keepsakes and photos in new and creative ways.

The IRGS meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the large first floor meeting room of the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street, Vero Beach.  Following a brief business session and snacks, the program will begin at 10:45 a.m.  All IRGS general meetings are free and open to the public.

Please come and be inspired to discover your inner artist!  By learning to recycle and repurpose family heirlooms, whether linens, photos or other memorabilia, you can preserve and share your family’s heritage and be prepared for holiday gift giving.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. Indian River County’s newest nature preserve set to open Friday

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The county’s newest nature preserve featuring several hiking trails through unspoiled Florida uplands and a mechanism to help clean the ailing Indian River Lagoon opens on Friday. The nearly 84-acre Osprey Acres Stormwater Park and Nature Preserve, located at 925 5th Street Southwest, consists of five hiking trails totaling 3.8 miles along uplands and a serpentine floway that is part of a stormwater treatment system designed to remove pollutants from stormwater and canal water before it enters the Indian River Lagoon. The park’s pollution reduction system is expected to reduce nitrogen entrance into the lagoon by roughly 3,700 pounds per year and phosphorus discharge by over 300 pounds annually.
