Sheriff says budget cuts mean back to basics

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY -- Sheriff Deryl Loar wanted a budget bigger by more than $400,000 for next year, but is likely to walk away with about $1.9 million less.

The sheriff asserted that cuts will have to come from services and not buying any big-ticket items – a move that’s likely to stir more tension between him and County Commissioners, some of whom see the Sheriff as largely having escaped cuts during the difficult past several years.

VERO BEACH -- In his search for the perfect dance performance opportunity for Christmas 2010, Riverside Children’s Theatre choreographer and master teacher, Adam Schnell, thought of the perennial favorite, “The Nutcracker Ballet” by the Russian composer, Peter Tchaikovsky.

But Schnell wanted a classic with a distinctively American twist. And he wanted something all young dancers could sink their teeth into, not just aspiring ballerinas in crackling tutus.

 
Humane Society seeks public’s help with case of 2 starving dogs

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY -- The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County and the Vero Beach Police Department are asking for the public’s help leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for two starving dogs.

“The Humane Society and the Police Department are their advocates,” Director of Animal Protective Services Ilka Daniel said. “Both of our organizations are pleading with the community to help us find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
