INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 58-year-old man was killed after his vehicle veered past a stop sign and crashed into a canal early Monday, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The man’s identity was not publicly released. Details on the town he lived in were not available.

This is the third fatal crash to occur in Indian River County within five days. Monday’s collision led law enforcement officials to close State Road 60 in both directions for several hours, sheriff’s officials said.

The wreck happened at 5:21 a.m. near southbound County Road 512 and State Road 60 in unincorporated Indian River County, eight miles south of Fellsmere, troopers said. The man was traveling south in a maroon 2018 Kia Sorento sports utility vehicle on C.R. 512.

Troopers said the man drove past a stop sign at the T-intersection. The vehicle drifted across both lanes on S.R. 60 and crashed into an embankment.

The impact left the SUV partially submerged in a canal, troopers said. The man was taken by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where doctors pronounced him dead, troopers and fire rescue officials said.

Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the deadly collision.
