Volunteer paints birdhouses for Habitat Scholarship Fund

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Supporters of Indian River Habitat for Humanity firmly believe that education is an important factor in breaking the cycle of poverty housing. To assist in that effort, a Scholarship Program has been established, providing funding for children of Habitat homeowners who wish to further their education.

Among the several fundraising efforts for this important program is the Birdhouse Project, with Habitat volunteers building birdhouses using scrap lumber from Habitat construction sites.  These are then sold (some painted and decorated and some plain) in our Home Center Store and at various events, with proceeds going into the Scholarship Program.

Several volunteers have discovered a talent for painting the birdhouses and have created some beauties. Among our volunteer artists is Carol DeRenzo who, with husband, Al, has been instrumental in establishing and sustaining the Scholarship Program. They also take great personal interest in young people and often serve as mentors.
