I-95, Babcock Road reopen after heavy smoke from wildfire

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Drivers can again travel Interstate 95 and Babcock Road after officials reopened the roadways.

The roads had been closed earlier this morning due to thick fog and smoke between County Road 512 and Malabar Road in Brevard County because of the 16,000-acre controlled burn west of Palm Bay.

The controlled burn is meant to help extinguish a 2,600-acre wildfire in the area.

Motorists using I-95 or Babcock Road through the Indian River/Brevard county lines should still allow extra drive time. Smoke from the Three Lakes reserve fire west of Brevard county has mixed with dense fog, authorities said.

Call 511 or visit the Florida Department of Transportation’s 511 website for the latest on road conditions related to these dense smoke conditions.
