Homeless Family Center Annual Dinner, Monday Nov. 9 at Quail Valley River Club

VERO BEACH — Join supporters of the Homeless Family Center 6 p.m. Monday Nov. 9 for their Fourth Annual dinner event at the Quail Valley River Club. This year’s event is themed, Opening Night – A red carpet evening of dinner, mystery and intrigue, and will feature the Sleuths Mystery Dinner Show from Orlando. Join fellow guests for an evening of comedy and wonderful food all to benefit the programs and services of the Homeless Family Center.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A cold weather shelter for the homeless and needy opened its doors again Wednesday night because of shivering temperatures expected this week, emergency service officials said. The Source, which first opened the shelter at its facility Tuesday night, opened again Wednesday evening. The building for the local Christian outreach ministry is located at 1015 Commerce Avenue. Guests who escaped the cold arrived and registered between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. at The Source, officials said. No one was accepted after 9 p.m. A meal was served Wednesday night, according to officials. Vero Beach mother Sabby Hightower had just gotten out of the shower, watching in horror as flames burst forward from her garage, forcing her, her four kids and her own mother to frantically run to safety. The Nov. 3 blaze destroyed the home, but the family escaped unharmed. "I'm not giving up," said Hightower, a single mother who was recently widowed. "I do not want my kids to ever give up on life." ‘Big Burger Blessing’: Residents unite to feed homeless, give school supplies

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Before Greg Jordan moved to Camp Haven homeless shelter nine months ago, he was living in his golf cart in Barefoot Bay in Brevard County. The 55-year-old said he worked at the Moorings Yacht & Country Club before being laid off in August 2017. Without family in the area to help, Jordan said he fell behind on his mortgage and lost his home, declared bankruptcy and was without shelter for two months.
