VERO BEACH — Police have identified the teenager in the shooting that took place Monday afternoon near Vero Beach High School.
Jamell Demons, 16, has been arrested in connection with the shots fired shortly after the Vero Beach High School dismissal bell rang, placing after-school activities on lock down Monday afternoon.
He faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of discharging a firearm in public, according to the press release. Demons was found at a nearby residence and taken into custody. A firearm was recovered later in the evening. He was turned over to the Juvenile Detention Center.
Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey said officers responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 2:30 p.m. after school let out at 2:15 p.m. The incident involved several juveniles, Currey said. A crime scene was cordoned off for processing and investigators are working to determine whether or not it was gang related.
Police notified school officials and after-school activities were placed in lock-down as a precaution, as the crime scene is only a block away and the juveniles involved “had initially fled the scene.”
Currey said no one was injured and that officers have two people in custody, but he could not confirm that the shooter had been apprehended as of 4:45 p.m. Monday. Currey said he was on his way back to the scene and that more information would be released this evening.
