Volunteers, boats needed for Sebastian spoil island cleanup

SEBASTIAN – The Sebastian Natural Resources Board and the Ocean Conservancy Waterway Cleanup Effort are looking for both volunteers and boats to get a spoil island in the lagoon cleaned up.

The effort will be held on Sept. 18, launching from the Sebastian Main Street boat ramp at 8 a.m.

Those who have kayaks or would rather paddle to the island rather than take a boat can borrow one from About Kayaks. The company will be providing kayaks to volunteers. They will launch from Riverview Park.

Organizers are asking that anyone planning to take a kayak to the island RSVP first so they know how many kayaks to ask for.

Anyone who can furnish a boat for the cleanup is asked to e-mail Robin Graves at [email protected] with information about the vessel.

“They are much appreciated,” Graves said of provided boats.

Boats will be used to ferry across volunteers and supplies, along with debris and trash collected from the island.

Gloves and bags will be furnished to volunteers, though they are reminded to wear a hat ad sunscreen.

For more information, either e-mail Robin Graves, or call (772) 918-8868.
