VERO BEACH — The Education Foundation of Indian River County is pleased to announce that four grants totaling more than $6,000 were selected to honor the legacy of the late Clint S. Malone. The grants will be funded by the Clint S. Malone Memorial Fund of the Indian River Community Foundation.
Mr. Malone was tragically killed by a drunk driver on October 13, 2007 while riding his bike next to his wife Jennifer in Panama City Beach, Florida. Malone had a great passion for education. He loved to read, to write and excelled in mathematics. He also enjoyed being physically active. Golf and swimming were a few of his favorites. Mr. Malone also believed that the key to success was to have confidence in one’s self and to develop strong social skills.
The following four grants were selected by the Malone family for funding:
“Stop and Think Songbook” by Clarissa Merritt, Kindergarten Teacher, Rosewood Magnet School, $320.73: This grant will supplement the school’s existing “Stop and Think Social Skills Program.” The project will impact all Kindergarten students at Rosewood Magnet. The funds will be used to purchase fun and developmentally appropriate song CD and learning card system.
“Shoebox Tasks for Students with Autism” by Tracey Van De Veire, Autism Teacher, Citrus Elementary School, $500.00: This grant will fund the purchase of the “Basic Shoebox Task Curriculum (16 Tasks) and the Motivational Shoebox Tasks (4 Tasks) for the entire autism program at Citrus. These tasks address developmental areas such as fine motivation, fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and multi-step sequencing.
“Positive Behavior Support” by John Keller, Behavior Support Specialist, Gifford Middle School, $2,500: This grant will fund a multi-year initiative to improve behavior and social skills of all students in grades 6th – 8th grades (approximately 1,000 students). The program will involve the implementation of strategies to teach social skills using research-based curriculum. It will also reward students who display desired behavior and social skills.
“Swimming, Scooping, Sinking, Safety and Science!” by Arleen Alter, Student Social Worker, Dodgertown and Highlands Elementary School, $2,729.00: This program will provide second graders at both schools with swim lessons. In addition, students will learn about water safety and science. The curriculum will also incorporate art, writing and math.
“Clint Malone would be happy to know that his name was attached to such innovative and motivational programs,” commented Clint’s mother, Judy Malone. Mrs. Malone added, “Clint lives on through the lives of others. What a wonderful opportunity this has been.”
