Vero Beach breaks daily heat record Wednesday

VERO BEACH β€” The temperature remained scorching hot throughout the city this week, breaking the daily heat record last set more than 30 years ago.

The heat climbed to 98 degrees on Wednesday in Vero Beach, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. The high temperature surpassed the previous record of 95 degrees set in 1987.

Two other cities on the Treasure and Space coasts also felt the intense heat on Wednesday.

The temperature in Melbourne reached 97 degrees, which broke the previous record of 95 degrees set in 1958. Fort Pierce also reached 97 degrees, which tied the record high set in 1948, forecasters said.

Vero Beach will continue to experience hot weather for the rest of the week. Thursday will have heat index values as high as 103 degrees and Friday as high as 105 degrees, meteorologists said.

The temperature will top off at nearly 93 degrees Thursday and drop to about 75 degrees in the evening. Friday will have a high temperature near 92 degrees, which will dip to about 76 degrees at night, forecasters said.
