VERO BEACH — Indian River County Commissioner Laura Moss was released from the hospital Wednesday after she was hit by a pickup truck two days prior, Vero Beach police spokesperson Master Officer Darrell Rivers said. Moss, a former Vero Beach mayor, suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground by the truck.

Rivers said he spoke to Moss Wednesday after she left HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.

“She was in great spirits and ready to get back to work for the people of this county,” Rivers said.

A 20-year-old Vero Beach man who was driving the pickup was cited for careless driving. No criminal charges will be filed in the incident, Rivers said.

“It was just merely an accident,” Rivers previously said.

The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. Monday as Moss was leaving Chelsea’s Gourmet Cafe on Cardinal Drive. The man was driving a 2003 Chevy pickup, going 10 mph, on northbound Cardinal Drive.

The man tried to make a left turn when the truck struck Moss as she crossed the street, Rivers said. The impact left Moss briefly unconscious and with an injury to the back of her head, police said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue crews took Moss by ambulance to Lawnwood trauma center as a precaution. Doctors at Lawnwood kept Moss for observation for two nights before she was released.
