Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s “Made in America: Side by Side” begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 24, at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th St. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, with free admission for audience members ages 18 and younger or those presenting a valid college ID. The concert highlights works by prominent American composers including George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, John Williams and Kenneth Fuchs, reflecting a wide range of styles from early 20th-century jazz-influenced orchestral music to contemporary symphonic writing. Brazilian-American pianist Alessandro da Fonseca will be the featured soloist in Gershwin’s “Second Rhapsody,” a rhythmically vibrant work that captures the energy of urban America. The program also includes the Southeast U.S. premiere of Fuchs’ “Quiet in the Land, a Poem for Orchestra,” with the composer expected to attend. In the second half, selected student musicians from across Central Florida will join the orchestra onstage as part of its mentorship initiative, performing side by side with professional players in a combined ensemble exceeding 100 musicians. Guest conductor Frederick Blanchard will lead Williams’ “Summon the Heroes,” composed for the 1996 Summer Olympics, while Music Director Aaron T. Collins conducts Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story,” concluding the orchestra’s 17th season. Organizers invite attendees to wear red, white and blue in recognition of the patriotic theme. The performance is intended as both a musical celebration and a community observance recognizing the nation’s historical milestones and those who have served.
