INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 21-year-old Vero Beach woman was killed after veering into the path of an oncoming truck while turning left onto Oslo Road on Monday, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said. Fire rescue crews used machinery to free the woman’s body from the car.
“The driver failed to observe the closing distance of (the second vehicle),” troopers said in a statement.
The other driver, a 20-year-old Vero Beach man, was taken to the HCA Florida Vero Beach Emergency Room with nonlife-threatening injuries. The collision closed east and westbound lanes on Oslo Road.
The wreck involving a 2008 Honda Civic and a 2024 Ford F-250 carrying a trailer happened about 3:14 p.m. at the Oslo Road and 66th Avenue intersection. Troopers said the woman was driving the Honda southbound on 66th Avenue, while the man was traveling west in the Ford pickup.
The woman reached the intersection and tried to turn onto eastbound Oslo Road. The front of the Ford struck the left side of the car.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
Officials reopened eastbound lanes on Oslo Road by 7 p.m. It was unclear when the westbound lanes would reopen to traffic.
The crash remains under investigation.
