INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 43-year-old Vero Beach man is awaiting a court date in connection with a May 2024 crash that killed a bicyclist on 90th Avenue, reports show. Law enforcement officials said the driver, identified as Anthony David McDaniel, had a blood-alcohol level of .130 at the time of the wreck.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said McDaniel “failed to use due care while approaching (the bicyclist),” according to a crash report. McDaniel, who was driving a white 2006 Dodge Ram, struck the bicyclist from behind on the darkened roadway.
Troopers identified the bicyclist as 59-year-old Danelle Ann Lozinak-Demellier, of Indian River County.
On August 25, McDaniel, of the 1600 block of Highland Avenue, Vero Beach, was charged with DUI manslaughter. McDaniel was held Thursday at the Indian River County Jail on a $51,500 bond.
McDaniel pled not guilty to the charge, waived his formal arraignment and requested a jury trial, court records show. McDaniel was also issued a citation for the wreck.
A witness gave troopers information about the deadly collision.
The crash happened on the evening of May 27, 2024, on northbound 90th Avenue, north of State Road 60 and east of Interstate 95. After the wreck, McDaniel hit the brakes, swerved the pickup truck to the left and stopped in the middle of the roadway, reports show.
McDaniel then drove to the right side of the street and parked on the grass shoulder. Lozinak-Demellier was taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, reports show.
McDaniel has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Oct. 16, court records show.
