GIFFORD — Two people were hurt in a three-vehicle crash that briefly blocked northbound lanes on U.S. 1 near 53rd Street Thursday, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said. Investigators later learned one of the drivers experienced a medical issue which caused the collision.
The wreck happened about 7 a.m. at 53rd Street and U.S. 1, northwest of Publix Super Market at Harbor Point. Sheriff’s officials said one of the vehicles crossed over the median, struck a truck and then hit another vehicle head-on.
The impact totaled one of the vehicles, which left mangled steel and debris scattered on the ground.
Two drivers were taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, sheriff’s officials said. All northbound lanes on U.S. 1 reopened by 9 a.m.
UPDATE: The northbound lanes of US 1 at 53rd Street have reopened following a 3-vehicle crash that happened shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday. All persons involved were transported to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
