INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A non-campus based staff member tested positive for COVID-19, prompting officials to place a middle school student on a two-week quarantine, authorities said.

This is the 12th incident at Indian River County schools where students were told to quarantine after COVID-19 cases were reported. It’s the first incident involving a staff member who was not based on campus, school officials said.

To date, 201 students and four staff members have been quarantined since the start of the school year.

The latest case involved an employee who provides support for Sebastian River Middle School and Sebastian River High School, the School District of Indian River County said in a statement. But, the staff member does not work on the campuses, officials clarified.

The Florida Department of Health identified a Sebastian River Middle School student who came in close contact with the employee. School officials called the family of the student and notified them the pupil will need to stay home and monitor for possible symptoms, officials said.

The student will continue school through virtual learning, authorities said.

School officials also notified all families and staff members at Sebastian River High School and Sebastian River Middle School of the incident. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campuses.
