Audubon Society plans spoil island cleanup day July 25

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Pelican Island Audubon Society and A Florida Outdoor Center have been collaborating and hosting a summer camp for kids 8-years-old and older at the new Audubon House. All of the activities are outside.

Part of the activities involve cleaning up the trash on the spoil island directly off the Oslo boat ramp where boaters often stop. To continue this partnership, both organizations have registered as a member of the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast, who is organizing a coastal cleanup on July 25, 2015 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Anyone who would like to join in further cleaning up the “adopted” island, come to the Oslo boat ramp at 8 a.m. with or without a boat. The group will provide kayaks and canoes for participants to use. As an added bonus, participants can paddle to the nearby rookery that is still very active with nesting birds this week. Everyone should stay at least 100-feet from the birds as to not disturb them.
