United Way delivers $670,000 in tax refunds

VERO BEACH — Thanks to a United Way service, Indian River County will benefit by $670,000 in tax refunds and saved tax preparer costs in 2013. United Way annually partners with the IRS to provide the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offering assistance to people with low to moderate incomes needing help preparing their own tax returns.

A total of 461 tax returns were filed at the United Way Center February 2 through April 15, adding up to a total refund amount to Indian River County residents of $589,062. The 10 IRS-trained and certified volunteers ensured taxpayers received credits due.

$236,502 was returned in Earned Income Tax Credits, $30,671 was returned in Child Tax Credits, and $12,324 was returned in Education Tax Credits. The average adjusted gross income for those being served was $17,960. Based on the IRS estimated average cost for tax return preparation, this VITA program saved tax filers $80,675.

This will be the fourth year United Way of Indian River County has provided free tax preparation through certified volunteers who generously contribute their time and expertise to make a better life for others.

“We’re privileged to serve Indian River County in this way. So many people are deeply appreciative of the help and no doubt would miss out on tax credits available to them without our competent and caring volunteers.

When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all, and our aim is to build a strong and healthy community,” explained Michael Kint, CEO, United Way of Indian River County.

The following local sponsors helped cover costs of offering this service: Kmetz Nuttal Elwell Graham, PLLC; Morgan Jacoby Thurn Boyle and Associates, P.A.; and Dasie Hope Center.
