Audubon Society seeks volunteers to remove exotic plants

VERO BEACH — The University of Florida Foundation is willing to sell the Pelican Island Audubon Society one acre adjacent to ORCA (Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area) on the south side of Oslo Rd to build its Audubon Community Center.

The land has some exotics, principally air potato vines, that make it inaccessible. They wish to remove the plants to facilitate a tree survey on half of the property where the building and parking lot will be.

The work involves pulling vines and putting them into a dumpster (which we are getting pro bono from Any Time Waste).

They are looking for volunteers to help to remove the vines for 2 hours from 7:30 am to 9:30 am during the cooler part of the morning for the next two weekend days – Saturday, Sept. 24 and Oct.1, and Sunday, Sept. 25 and Oct. 2.

Please bring/wear: long sleeve shirt, long pants, work gloves, hat, close toe shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, water, small trowels, and loppers and trimming shears if you have them.

Find the location by going east on Oslo Rd (9th St. SE) from US1 (Publix Shopping Center-South Vero Square) turning right (south) into the UF Florida Medical Entomology Lab property. You will see the dumpster on the right in a gravel parking lot.
