VERO BEACH — More rip current rescues - along with medical calls and updates on beach projects - were noted for the May 2021 Vero Beach Lifeguard Association report. City lifeguards monitoring the shores rescued five people from rip currents last month, bringing the total number of water rescues to 13 this year, officials said. VERO BEACH — As warmer weather continues to bring beachgoers to the shores, city lifeguards noted some common occurrences including rip current rescues and stings from marine animals in their monthly report. There were 25 medical rescues in April at the beaches in Vero Beach, which include Jaycee Park Beach, Humiston Park Beach and South Beach Park. Five of the rescues - including one involving heat-exhaustion - were listed as serious and required emergency medical services, according to the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association report. Rip current rescue, erosion noted in Feb. beach report

VERO BEACH — Lifeguards pulled a 12-year-old boy from a rip current after they spotted him struggling in the water near South Beach Park last month. City lifeguards were using binoculars to scan the beach when they saw the boy being pulled further out into the water, north of South Beach Park, officials said. Lifeguard officials said the boy was at least 20 yards out in the ocean. The lifeguards used all-terrain vehicles to quickly drive to the shoreline, officials said. The lifeguards jumped into the water and pulled the boy to shore. No injuries were reported, officials said. It was unclear what town the boy was from.
