Driver dead in partially submerged vehicle in Vero Lake Estates

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – A 76-year-old man was found dead in a roadside canal in Vero Lake Estates Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver, Thomas Clyde Adkins, of Vero Beach, had been driving north on 106th Avenue approaching S. 81st Street Monday morning when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the curve of the intersection, FHP said. Adkins failed to negotiate the curve and traveled across the north shoulder of the roadway and into a water-filled ditch, where the vehicle overturned. The vehicle, a 2010 Jeep SUV came to rest partially submerged.

Adkins’ cause of death is under investigation. According to FHP, he was wearing a seatbelt.
