Man accused of taking hotdogs at Walmart: why buy ‘when I can steal it?’

VERO BEACH — A homeless man with more than $12 in his pocket was arrested, accused of stealing a package of hotdogs and smoked ham from Walmart worth $5, according to authorities. When asked why he didn’t just pay for the items, the man asked, “why, when I can just steal it?” the arrest report states.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mark David Griffiths, 49, early Friday morning on a charge of retail theft. He is being held at the county jail on $500 bond.

The deputy on scene wrote in his report that he saw the hotdogs sticking out of Griffths’ jacket pocket when he placed the defendant under arrest. Griffiths told the deputy he stole the food because he was hungry.

Griffiths also told the deputy that it didn’t matter that he was arrested because he would “do three days and be out doing the same thing again,” the deputy wrote in the report.
