SEBASTIAN — Several members of the Boys and Girls Club in Sebastian braved the hot Saturday morning sun and scorching black asphalt to scrub dirty cars clean for donations all in an effort to raise enough money to send them to Walt Disney and Rapids Water Park.
“It’s good to see kids working hard,” said Jarad Pelletier, 18, a staff member at the club who started as a member when he was a kid.
Within an hour of their scheduled 4-hour car wash at the McDonald’s on US 1, the teens had raised nearly three times that of a prior carwash. They would no sooner finish one vehicle and two more would show up. “It’s a nice day,” Pelletier said.
Teen Director James Byrd bounced from car to car, directing traffic and tossing carwash supplies to the teens. He said that the teens needed to raise at least $150 so the club could match it and send the teen junior staff to Walt Disney World.
Anything over $150 would be split with the teen members so they could go to Rapids Water Park, he said.
Nicole Raynor, of Sebastian, dropped off her daughter, Ashley Ferguson, at the carwash to participate. She stuck around to have her own car washed and to “just make sure she does a good job,” Raynor said of her daughter.
Donna Lindeman stopped by the Boys and Girls Club carwash after finding the line too long at the place she wanted to have her car cleaned.
“You always see news about kids doing bad things,” Lindeman said while waiting for her car to be washed. “It’s nice to see them working hard.”
How to help:
While Teen Director James Byrd said that he expected the kids to raise enough money at the carwash to cover their planned trips, he said donations are always welcome.
Those wishing to, can donate by mailing checks payable to the Boys and Girls Club and mailing them to 1415 Friendship Lane, Sebastian, FL 32958.
