WABASSO — A 62-year-old Indian River County man who was struck and killed by a freight train after walking on the tracks, was identified as William Ronald Forte Jr., said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

“(Forte) lived very close to the crash scene,” Jaworski said. Jaworski said Forte was not homeless.

The collision happened about 7:20 a.m. Sunday at the railroad crossing at 77th Street, just west of Old Dixie Highway. Forte was pronounced dead at the scene, Jaworski said.

The conductor stopped the freight train immediately after the crash. The train and its cars were about 2 miles long, causing officials to close multiple rail crossings for several hours.

Florida East Coast Railway officials moved the train from the crash site about 12:15 p.m., Jaworski said. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Florida East Coast Railway.
