Canoe excursions offered at ELC

WABASSO ISLAND — The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) offers a variety of canoe excursions led by volunteer guides.  This is a very special way to experience the outdoors, get close to the water and explore some off the beaten path canoe trails.

The two and a half hour trips are offered as sunrise, sunset and Sunday afternoon paddles; the sunrise and sunset events offering an excellent chance to watch the lagoon’s water birds feeding or roosting.

The cost, including canoe and gear, is $15 for adults and $7 for children ($12 and $4 for members).

The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off County Road 510 at the western edge of the Wabasso Bridge.  Its 64-acre island campus includes exhibit areas, native plant gardens, picnic facilities, gift shop and visitor center.

Man critical after self-inflicted gunshot wound near Wabasso Beach Park

WABASSO BEACH — A man was in critical condition Thursday after deputies said he shot himself while on a surfboard in the water not far from Wabasso Beach County Park. The incident led law enforcement to close the beach for several hours. The shooting was an isolated incident. There was no known danger to the public, Indian River County sheriff's spokesperson Lt. County announces beach closures ahead of beach restoration project

At least two beaches will be closed starting this weekend ahead of the beach restoration project, which will start back up next week, county officials said. The project aims to restore sand - which had been washed away by storms and hurricanes over the years - at the beaches. Beach park access at Seagrape Trail Beach Access and Treasure Shores Park Beach will both close starting Friday, county officials said.
