Indian River County Sheriff’s Office delivers Meals on Wheels to disabled seniors

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar is proud to announce a partnership with the Senior Resource Association to deliver Meals on Wheels to disabled and homebound seniors. Indian River County Sheriff’s Office volunteers delivered meals last week in the beginning stages of this program.

The meals are prepared by the staff at the School District of Indian River County and picked up by Sheriff’s Office volunteers at Storm Grove Middle School. Sheriff’s Office volunteers deliver hot, healthy meals to seniors who are unable to shop or cook for themselves.

“This program allows seniors to continue living independently, in the comfort of their own home, while also providing the security of the Sheriff’s Office visiting them on a daily basis,” said Sheriff Deryl Loar. “When our volunteers deliver food, they will also deliver information on other programs we offer for seniors such as We Care, Project Lifesaver, and House Watch.”

The We Care program is manned by volunteers and offers daily wellness calls with a follow up home visit for seniors living alone.

Project Lifesaver is a joint partnership between the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and the Alzheimer and Parkinson Association of Indian River County to provide tracking devices that assist deputies in locating missing Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.

House Watch provides residential checks for seasonal residents of Indian River County.

Participants in the Meals on Wheels program receive deliveries weekdays between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Volunteer Sgt. Ray Grimaldi, after his first day of delivering meals, said he was glad to have participated.

“What an awesome experience,” he said.
