FELLSMERE — The Fellsmere Farmers Market and Mercado will have two additions to its offerings on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The market will feature pony rides for the children and a hydroponics demonstration for adults.
“We don’t want you to just buy, but also to learn,” said market organizer and Fellsmere Councilwoman Sara Savage.
Florida Veggies, a Vero Beach organization, will conduct a demonstration during the market, sometime between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Using a kiddie pool bought from any number of stores, home growers can create their own hydroponic garden.
Savage said one of the goals of the farmers market is to educate the public on ways to be self-sufficient.
Eventually, she’d like to offer other demonstrations and discussions regarding saving and planting seeds as well as simple canning.
Party Acres will be joining the Farmers Market and Mercado on Saturday, as well, offering pony rides to children. There is a cost to ride.
Savage said the pony rides are meant to help draw more families to the market.
“We would like to see more young people” at the market, she said.
The Fellsmere Farmers Market and Mercado is held in front of the Old Fellsmere School, 22 S. Orange St., every second, fourth and fifth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
