SEBASTIAN — For the second time in a week, a health fair helped to bring medical awareness to the city’s residents. They had their blood pressure checked, vision screened, and even massages, working out the stress from the rest of the week.
“This town must have the best vision and hearing and skin,” joked Monte Dotson, hearing director for the Monnett Center for Hearing.
For seven years, Sebastian United Methodist Church has reached out into the community, helping residents to understand the importance of taking care of themselves.
“It’s been a steady flow,” said Parish nurse Inez Fielding, RN, of the turnout to Saturday’s health fair. “This is part of our health ministry.”
The fair serves as a way for residents to get free vision and blood pressure screenings, which can help detect potential medical complications before it is too late, Fielding said.
Gloria Ajose attended the fair to have her vision checked. Ajose has been retired from the medical field for 14 years and wanted to catch up on latest medical advances.
“You always pick up things,” she said.
A former member of the medical community, Ajose said health fairs such as the one at Sebastian United Methodist are important.
“They bring about an awareness of taking care of oneself,” she said.
