VERO BEACH — One of Indian River County’s historic jewels, the Hallstrom House, is now open for visitors three afternoons a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m.
The brick house was built in the late 1910s by citrus and business pioneer Axel Hallstrom for his family. Axel’s daughter Ruth bequeathed the house to the Indian River County Historical Society in 1999.
Over the past dozen years, the Society has restored the house, inventoried the furnishings and has begun cataloging the documents related to the family and its agricultural and business activities.
Trained docents provide tours of the home, focusing on the family’s Swedish heritage, Axel Hallstrom’s horticultural innovations, and the Hallstroms’ contributions to the economic and cultural life of the community.
The Hallstrom House is located at 1723 Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach. No reservations are required for groups of fewer than five people. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.
For larger groups, reservations may be made in advance by calling the Historical Society office at (772) 778-3435.
