Barry Lee Strickland, 56, Vero Beach

Barry Lee Strickland, 56, of Vero Beach, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010 at Consulate Health Care of Vero Beach.

Strickland was born Nov. 15, 1953 in Miami and moved to Vero Beach 5 years ago from North Carolina. He was a sorter and mail carrier for the Post Office prior to becoming disabled. Strickland was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his parents Donald Clyde Strickland, of North Carolina and Betty Jean Strickland, of Vero Beach; and brothers Gene Strickland, of North Carolina, Jim Strickland, of North Carolina and Roy Strickland, of Vero Beach.

He was predeceased by his twin brother Gary Sutherland two months ago.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Vero Beach with Pastor Derrick West officiating.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Howle, Zudans win in Vero; Kinchen, McPartlan, Iovino in Sebastian

All results are in for the Vero Beach and Sebastian municipal elections. Voters have returned Harry Howle to the Vero Beach Council and Bob McPartlan and Linda Kinchen to the Sebastian Council. Val Zudans will join Howle on the Vero Council, while Albert Iovino will round out the last of three seats up for grabs on the Sebastian Council.
