Recreational anglers who fish on Atlantic reefs must register with the state

The state of Florida announced this week a $3-million, mandatory reef fishing registration program. Beginning July 1, all recreational anglers who fish for 13 species of reef fish in Florida's Atlantic waters must register each year with the state – a measure aimed at learning how many fish are being harvested to help manage stocks better. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, meeting virtually on Thursday, voted unanimously to expand the Gulf Reef Fish Survey – launched in 2015 – to the entire state. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th. Sea turtle conservation workshop held Friday

Photo by Dan Alexander Vero Beach oceanfront residents and business owners attended a free workshop from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. last Friday on sea turtle conservation through turtle-friendly lighting. The workshop was held at the Intergenerational Recreation Center, 1590 9th St. S.W., Vero Beach.  Pre-registration was not required, and a free lunch was served. Attendees learned about city and county 'dark beach' ordinances aimed at protecting nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings, and the code enforcement protocols for enforcing those laws.  They also heard from local lighting experts about turtle-friendly installations and retrofits, and lighting distributors displayed their products.
