VERO BEACH — The City of Vero Beach Recreation Department’s Annual Aerial Antics Circus has closed a very successful 35th season.
The circus, which changes themes each year and was titled “A Night at the Movies” for 2009 featured approximately 100 children involved in the City of Vero Beach’s recreation programs. This year’s circus had a cinematic theme and invokes noted performances such as Cirque du Soleil.
The performances combined gymnastics, dance, adagio, and circus aerials with music and choreography set to movie soundtracks.
Each show’s cast was a different group of kids who have trained and rehearsed all summer for the show, which was set again this year in the Waxlax Center at St. Edward’s Upper School on the barrier island in Vero Beach.
The show spanned four evenings, and started Aug. 5, and wrapped up Saturday with a special tribute to all the former performers.
Patty Mattingly, assistant recreation director and one of the co-organizers, said that the Vero Beach Recreation Department sought out anyone who may still be in the area who, at one time or another, performed in the city’s circus. All alumni of the Aerial Antics Circus who attended Saturday were recognized in the spotlight.
“It’s exciting,” said Mattingly.
Performers included the Aerial Antics Summer Campers, the Vero Beach Recreation Department gymnastics students and Performing Groups, Miss Julie’s Dance Arts students, and the Serendipity Dancers.
