Vero Beach Theatre Guild will open the popular drama “Steel Magnolias” this Friday, Sept. 11. The play runs through Sept. 27. Set in a small Louisiana town, the storyline follows the women who gather at Truvy’s beauty salon to share gossip, laughter and lean on each other over life’s challenges. The story centers on strong-willed M’Lynn and her spirited daughter, Shelby, whose wedding plans are complicated by Shelby’s health problems. Tickets are $30 to $35. Heather Stapleton will speak on “My Plastic Diet” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Raw Space Gallery, 1795 Old Dixie Highway, Vero Beach. Stapleton, a former education director with the Environmental Learning Center, is community engagement coordinator with the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program. Her presentation, sponsored by the Stewards of Indian River County program, will address hidden problems with single-stream recycling and explain why most plastics are not recycled. Stapleton also will discuss how microplastics threaten Indian River Lagoon ecosystems and share ways residents can reduce their use of plastic. Admission is free. A golf tournament to benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation will begin with an 8:30 a.m. ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start and lunch. Lines in the Lagoon Junior Fishing Tournament runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, between the Sebastian and Fort Pierce inlets, with a 3:30 p.m. awards ceremony at Walking Tree Brewery, 3209 Dodger Road, Vero Beach. The tournament is open to children in kindergarten through 12th grade and may be fished by boat, from a dock or seawall, or from shore; inlet fishing is not permitted. The final photo submission deadline is 2:30 p.m. Registration is $35. Registration includes fishing participation, a wristband, T-shirt, goody bag and complimentary dinner at the awards ceremony. The event is intended to teach young participants about sport fishing and the Indian River Lagoon, one of the most bio-diverse estuaries in North America and home to over 2,100 species of plants and over 2,200 species of animals. The Vero Beach Museum of Art presents “Frank Lloyd Wright and His Influence on Florida Architecture” beginning 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The program, led by preservationist, author, historian and artist Wayne Wood, will examine Wright’s work and his connection to Florida’s architectural history. Wood, who has been called the “undisputed godfather of preservation in Jacksonville,” has written 15 books about Northeast Florida, including “Jacksonville’s Architectural Heritage: Landmarks for the Future.” The lecture is free, but pre-registration is required. The museum also will offer free admission throughout the day as part of its Second Saturdays programming, including family-oriented Museum Studios from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free.
