Helen Margaret Young Post, 91, Vero Beach

December 20, 1933 – September 19, 2025

Helen Margaret Young Post, 91, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Medical Center.

Helen was born in Nutley, NJ, on December 20, 1933, to Wilhelmina Plansoen and John Young, and lived a life devoted to her family, her faith, and her community. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard G. Post and is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Cundari (Les Gwyn-Williams) of Verona, NJ, and Susan Schlachtenhaufen (the late Jeff) of Lake Forest, IL; eight loving grandchildren: Robert Jr. and John Post, Craig and Thomas Cundari, Helen, John, Will, and Lucy Schlachtenhaufen; and three great-grandchildren: Madelyne, Robert, and Annie Post. She was predeceased by her dear sons, John and Robert, and her sisters, Wilhelmina Sobel and Johanna Young.

Helen’s passion for education was evident throughout her life. She earned an associate degree from Endicott College, a master’s degree in education from Seton Hall University, and was later awarded an honorary doctorate from Endicott College. She began her career in Montclair, New Jersey, as an educator, teaching honors algebra and computer science. She was exceptionally committed to her students and served on numerous committees for mathematics curriculum review and revision for the Montclair Public School System.

Helen was deeply involved in her community. She served with numerous organizations, including the Junior League Sustainers of Indian River County, the Elliott Museum (Life Member), the American Cancer Society (Excalibur Award), the Indian River Hospital Foundation (where she served as Chairman), the Riverside Theatre Board of Trustees, the Vero Beach Museum of Art Board of Trustees, and the Indian River Memorial Hospital Post Chapel, where she and her late husband, Dick, were founders and later served as Trustees Emeritus.

Helen and Dick were also deeply committed to philanthropy, with a special focus on supporting children’s cancer research. They gave generously to organizations such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Palm Beach, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Their generosity extended to many other causes as well, including the Senior Resource Center, V.N.A., Shiloh Tabernacle Ministries, the Humane Society, Hope for Families, and Endicott College — Helen’s alma mater and a place especially meaningful to them both. These are just a few of the many organizations they supported over the years. Their dedication to the community was perhaps best reflected in their three-decade sponsorship of May Pops, a beloved annual outdoor concert benefiting the hospital.

Helen’s generosity also extended to supporting educational opportunities for others. She established scholarships at Endicott College, Colgate University, Roanoke College, the Holland Society of New York, the St. Lucie Community Children’s Theater, the Community Church of Vero Beach, the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, IL, Hillsdale College, Masters Academy of Vero Beach, and many other institutions close to her heart. Over the years, Helen received countless heartfelt letters from students whose lives were transformed by these opportunities. Her generosity touched more than their education; through her kindness and encouragement, Helen gave these students a lasting sense of hope and possibility.

In addition, Helen was a longtime member of several clubs, including Quail Valley Golf Club, Vero Beach Country Club, Vero Beach Yacht Club, Grand Harbor Golf and Beach Club, Garden Club of Indian River County, Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club, and Essex Fells Country Club.

Those who knew Helen will remember her as a woman of many gifts. She was fiercely faithful and loyal to her friends, always ready to listen or lend a helping hand. She found joy in painting and playing the piano and harp, and in her younger years, she loved spending time on the paddle and tennis courts. Helen was also deeply intelligent and patient, qualities that made her an exceptional teacher and a trusted source of guidance and comfort to many. Helen and her family are deeply grateful to all who filled her life with happiness, and especially to those who brought her care and comfort in her final days, including her dear friend Dr. Michaela G. Scott.

Her kindness and generosity touched everyone she met. Helen had a radiant smile and sparkling eyes that could light up a room, and she made others feel special just by being around them. She brought warmth and laughter wherever she went, often the life of the party without needing to be the center of attention. Most of all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love for her family never wavered. Her daughters are grateful beyond words for the mother they had and will miss her deeply for the rest of their lives.

A memorial service will be held at Community Church in Vero Beach on November 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Post Chapel Endowment Fund at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Foundation, 70 Royal Palm Pointe, Vero Beach, FL 32960. For more information, please call 772-226-4960 or link at  https://give.ccf.org/HelenYPost.

Monica Rohde Shotwell, 77, Vero Beach

May 4, 1948 – September 21, 2025

On Sunday, September 21, 2025 at the age of 77 and after a two year battle with cancer, Immaculada Monica Rohde Shotwell died peacefully in her home.

Monica was born on May 4, 1948 in Quezon City, a now sub-city of Metro Manila in the Philippines. She was the third of eight children born to Anselmo Shotwell and Immaculada Rohde Shotwell.

Intellectually curious and something of a firebrand, Monica was very involved in the student movements against martial law in the Philippines in the 1970’s and early 80’s. During this time, she obtained bachelors and masters degrees in sociology as well as a medical doctorate. In 1983, Monica immigrated to the United States to complete her medical training with a psychiatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

At Baylor, Monica met fellow psychiatric trainee and future partner of her life, John Ford Aruffo.  Monica and John lived, worked, and raised their family in Little Rock, Arkansas. Using her lifelong interest in people, Monica spent twenty years as a geriatric psychiatrist at the VA hospital in North Little Rock. Her free time was used teaching Sunday school at Christ the King Catholic Church, raising orchids, learning to cook, and attending the many baseball games and dance recitals of her son and daughter, Anthony and Christina Aruffo.

In 2014, Monica retired to Vero Beach with her husband John. In her time in Florida, her cooking skills flourished, she was able to grow many of the tropical fruits of her youth, and she learned to quilt. In retirement she was also able to devote more time to her catholic faith, a cornerstone of her life. Monica was a member of various catholic and Christian groups including the Legion of Mary.

Born the third of eight, Monica is also the third of her siblings to depart this earth. She is preceded in death by her brothers William and Juan Shotwell. Her siblings—Maria, Mercedes, Antonio, Anselmo, and Fernando—her husband John, and her children by blood and marriage—Anthony, Christina, and Noelle—carry her love and memory forward.

A Catholic service will be held for Monica Shotwell at 11:00am on Friday October 3, 2025 at St Sebastian Catholic Church in Sebastian, FL.
