GIFFORD — Troopers continue to probe a deadly two-vehicle wreck that claimed the life of a 41-year-old Gifford man last month. Indian River County sheriff's officials identified the man as Christopher Devon Harris, who was riding a motorcycle. Two women who were traveling in the other vehicle - a black sedan - were not hurt, said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. The collision involving the motorcycle and the black car happened about 10 p.m., July 24, in the 3800 block of 45th Street in Gifford. VERO BEACH — DNA evidence left on a steering wheel airbag led police to nab a man suspected of speeding in his girlfriend's vehicle before crashing into a wooden power pole and two trees. The woman died in the wreck while the man ran from the crash site, according to the Vero Beach Police Department. "DNA lab results later confirmed that Mr. (Michael) Slaughter’s DNA was found on the steering wheel airbag, which deployed during the crash," Vero Beach police said in a statement. FELLSMERE — An 87-year-old Vermont man was killed after being struck by a pickup while trying to rescue a turtle along the interstate on Sunday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
