INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies arrested an 11-year-old Storm Grove Middle School student one day after another student found a suspicious note prompting a campus lockdown and search. The note described a bomb on campus, sheriff’s officials said.
“The student wrote the note and admitted to placing it between the lockers,” said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
The girl was taken into custody about 3 p.m. Thursday, Jaworski said. The student was charged with written threats to kill, a second-degree felony offense.
“We are not releasing (the student’s) name at this time,” Jaworski said. The girl will be taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Fort Pierce.
The other student found the note about 10 a.m. Wednesday between two lockers at the school, located at 57th Street and 62nd Avenue in Indian River County. Jaworski said the note was planted there.
The corner of the note had the words “read me,” Jaworski said. The inside of the note indicated there was a bomb in the school.
The student told a teacher, who then notified administrators and the school resource deputy. Deputies canvassed the 1,007-student campus for nearly two hours and determined there was no credible threat, Jaworski said.
The students stayed in classrooms during the precautionary lockdown. The search did not heavily disrupt daily activities, Jaworski said.
Deputies reviewed surveillance footage, which did not show anyone placing the note within the past few days.
“The note was placed some time ago,” Jaworski previously said. “This was not an active threat.”
