VERO BEACH — Detectives continue to investigate a weekend incident involving an unidentified man killed after lying down on the railroad tracks and getting struck by a Brightline train, police reports show.
The incident happened shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, June 21 in the area of the 16th Street Railroad Crossing, west of U.S. 1 in Vero Beach. Police said the train stopped about 200 yards south of the crossing.
Officers spoke with two train conductors, who said the man emerged from the bushes east of the railroad tracks. The train was headed southbound at 79 mph, reports show.
The conductors told police the man ran toward the tracks and began lying flat on his stomach. The incoming train struck and killed the man, police said.
The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Fort Pierce.
