He was the oldest of eleven children born to Mary Arlene Wallace and Glen Goodfellow, and having been born on St. Patrick’s Day, was nicknamed “Pat” from birth. Pat attended Chittenango schools and graduated high school in 1959. He then attended SUNY Canton and graduated with an associate’s degree in 1961. He received his bachelors’ degree from SUNY Utica-Rome in 1976 and finally received his master’s degree in organizational development from American University in

He retired in 1997 as Manager of Human Resource Development, after 36 years of employment with Carrier Corporation (later United Technologies) in Syracuse. Following his retirement, Pat and Carol moved into their 5th wheel travel trailer and toured the United States for five years. They came “off the road” in 2002 when they settled in Sebastian and bought a home in Park Place. Their love of travel continued as they took numerous cruise trips throughout the years, a wonderful trip to Italy and Greece for their 35th wedding anniversary, and as officers in the operation of Value Travel, a home-based travel agency they had for ten years. Though retired from full-time work and play, Pat continued to work as an Access Control Officer for Bermuda Bay on USA1A in Indian River Shores, FL.
While his sons were growing up, Pat was involved in their lives through the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Cubmaster for their respective packs, and later as Scoutmaster to their troops. He taught scouting skills on numerous adult leader training courses throughout the years, and this culminated in conducting two Woodbadge Advanced Leader Training courses, high honors, indeed. Additionally, he served as an adult leader trainer at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for 2 years. He was awarded the District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver by the Hiawatha Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the highest award given on the Council level.
Pat’s volunteer work did not stop there. He was instrumental in starting the Senior Activity Center of Sebastian and served several years as treasurer and board member. He gave freely of his time and talent to First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, where he and his wife were active members.
During his retirement, Pat was a hobbyist silversmith. He made over 50 beautiful, handcrafted jewelry items each year to give as Christmas gifts to each female family member, including the most recently born babies. Pat was a life-long student of history, having been born in the aftermath of World War II. He had a true love of learning.

At just 16 years old, Malcolm enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning a distinguished military career that would span 27 years. His service was marked by dedication and bravery, culminating in his rise to the rank of Chief Petty Officer—a title he carried with pride throughout his life. Among his many honors was the rare distinction of witnessing the signing of the Peace Treaty aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. His naval journey took him across the globe through pivotal moments in history including World War II, Normandy, Korea, Vietnam, and the Bay of Pigs.
Malcolm’s commitment to service extended beyond his military career. He was an active member of the Masons and contributed generously to Masonic organizations such as Shriners Children’s International. His sense of duty and community spirit left a lasting impact on those around him.
A man of strength and integrity, Malcolm was known as the rock of his family. He embraced life with vigor—whether running through the streets of Palm Beach County as a boy picking mangos from trees at Mar-a-Lago or reminiscing about fond encounters with figures like Marjorie Merriweather Post. He witnessed nearly every major technological and cultural shift of the modern era—from black-and-white matinee films and old-time radio to space travel and self-driving cars.
Malcolm found joy in simple pleasures: watching Miami Dolphins games, traveling with his beloved wife Linda M. Rhinehart and their special companion Mr. Farley, and spending cherished time with his large extended family.
He is survived by his devoted wife Linda; sister Laura Wills; daughters Kimberly Mercer, Nada Collins, Angela Austin, and Shelly Elliot; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. His legacy also honors those who preceded him in death: Elsie Miller and grandparents Herman and Jessie Allen.
Malcolm’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was a testament to courage, loyalty, and love—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Visitation will be held on February 23, 2026, from 05:00 PM to 07:00 PM at Palm Beach National Funeral Home and Chapel 10055 Heritage Farm Rd., Lake Worth, Florida, followed by a Masonic Services, OES Services and Religious Services.
