Patients benefit from advances in post-weight-loss contouring

For decades, weight loss felt like a locked door for many people – no matter how carefully they counted calories, how faithfully they exercised, or how strictly they followed their doctor’s advice, the scale refused to move. With each failed attempt, frustration mounted and the hope of a lighter, healthier future slipped further away. Then came GLP-1 medications and, for many, that locked door finally swung open.

“The advent of GLP-1 medications has literally given these people new life,” said Dr. Alan Durkin, a board-certified plastic and reconstruction surgeon and owner of Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery.

“We’ve always believed there is a strong synergy between wellness and aesthetics, and we’ve offered a wellness program for nearly four years. But once GLP medications became widely available, that side of our practice exploded.

“More people are losing weight rapidly, including many who never considered plastic surgery before. But now they’re eager to continue improving themselves. They finally see a pathway back to a healthy weight, and once they start feeling good again, they want to keep moving forward.”

Rapid, significant weight loss can come with an unexpected downside. When the pounds drop quickly, skin that has been stretched for years often doesn’t snap back into place. Instead, many patients are left with loose, sagging skin around the abdomen, arms, thighs and neck – an outcome that can overshadow the excitement of reaching their goal weight.

Traditionally, the solution to saggy skin involved surgical lifts with longer incisions and recovery times. But advances in non-surgical body contouring technology are changing that equation.

One of the newest tools transforming post-weight-loss care is the Renuvion AYON body contouring system. This FDA-cleared, all-in-one platform integrates multiple technologies into a single streamlined device, allowing physicians to address fat removal, tissue contraction and skin tightening in one controlled, reproducible process. Instead of relying on multiple machines for different stages of contouring, AYON brings everything together – including electrosurgical functions, aspiration tools and energy-based skin contraction – into a single system.

Unlike traditional liposuction, which removes fat but does little to improve skin laxity, the Renuvion AYON system targets both fat and the underlying connective tissue. It is designed to contract tissue and tighten skin, making it particularly effective for patients who have lost a substantial amount of weight. The technology is FDA-cleared for improving the appearance of loose skin on the neck and other areas of the body, as well as for contracting soft tissue following liposuction.

Renuvion AYON combines radiofrequency (RF) energy with cold helium plasma to create a powerful yet controlled rejuvenation effect beneath the skin. Using a long, thin instrument inserted just below the surface, RF energy is delivered to deep tissue layers, stimulating collagen production and leading to thicker, firmer skin over time. At the same moment, cold helium plasma rapidly cools the tissue. This unique pairing allows physicians to reach higher, more effective RF temperatures while maintaining safety, ultimately resulting in superior skin tightening and fat reduction outcomes, according to Dr. Durkin.

“The best incision I make is the incision I don’t make,” Dr. Durkin joked. “This non-surgical, power-assisted liposuction removes loose wrinkles through just two or three tiny poke holes. You do lose fat, but the real magic is tightening the skin. The fascia tightens, collagen is created, and the results are immediate. Patients come in with loose, wrinkled skin and walk out smoother, tighter and contoured. And best of all – there’s virtually no scarring.”

For patients who have worked hard to lose weight, the impact can be profound.

“When people lose weight, they most often struggle with loose skin around the belly, thighs and arms,” Dr. Durkin explained. “This system can target each of those areas without surgery.

Patients walk out the very same day with a new body image. There is virtually no body-contouring scenario this technology can’t address. These people have finally reached their ideal weight. They just want their life back, and we can help them do that quickly and safely.”

Body contouring is just one part of a comprehensive wellness approach at Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery, according to Dr. Durkin.

The practice’s weight-loss program addresses patients metabolically from the start. GLP-1 medications are prescribed and carefully monitored with quarterly lab work, ensuring patients remain healthy and receive the precise dosage they need. The practice also offers hormone replacement therapy and peptide therapy, further supporting energy levels, metabolism and overall vitality.

“The medication gives people new life,” Dr. Durkin said, “and our job is to make sure they stay healthy while they’re on it.”

Ultimately, the transformation goes far beyond the mirror.

“Our patients want to lose weight, regain vitality, and become candidates for their best life,” Dr. Durkin continued. “GLP-1 medications were originally designed for diabetics, and they work beautifully for them. But they’ve also proven to be life-changing for non-diabetics who have struggled with weight for years.”

Some patients, he noted, have taken up dancing, rock climbing or other physical activities they once believed were out of reach.

“They don’t just look better,” he said. “They feel better. They move better. And for the first time in a long time, they’re living fully in bodies that finally feel like their own.”
