Meteorologists issued a tornado watch Saturday afternoon for parts of Florida, including the Treasure Coast, along with areas to the north and west. The advisory comes after several counties experienced powerful thunderstorms – packing strong wind gusts and heavy hail – this week.

The tornado watch, which includes Indian River County, remains in effect until 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Residents in Brevard were already experiencing strong hailstorms.

Indian River County was expected to have a 60 percent chance of storms Saturday, and a 90 percent chance of showers on Sunday, forecasters said. Both days were expected to have up to 20 mph south winds, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
