INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A woman was struck and killed by a freight train Friday morning, prompting an investigation by sheriff’s detectives and the Florida East Coast Railway, officials said.

An FEC railway worker notified Indian River County sheriff’s officials about 6:09 a.m. that the train struck the pedestrian just north of the 12th Street crossing. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s officials said.

FEC railway officials stopped the train at the 12th and 8th street intersections. Sheriff’s officials asked motorists to avoid the area.

“As a reminder, please, obey the safety equipment at railroad grade crossings and never walk on the railroad tracks,” sheriff’s officials said.
