Student charged after BB gun found in backpack at school

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 12-year-old Storm Grove Middle School student was arrested after deputies found an unloaded BB gun in his backpack at the campus Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said.

“Two students told a teacher they saw and heard a sixth-grader had a BB gun,” Indian River County sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Joe Abollo said. “The teacher told the school resource deputy. The child was immediately removed from the classroom.”

The boy, a sixth-grader, was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, Abollo said. The student was taken to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice in Fort Pierce.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. at the campus, located off 62nd Avenue. Deputies searched the boy’s backpack and found the black 9mm BB pistol, which officials said looked like a Glock-19 style firearm.

“The child said he brought the gun to show to other kids,” Abollo said. “No threats were made and there were no injuries.”

Deputies seized the BB gun into evidence. It was unclear how the boy got the BB gun.

Deputies were already at the school for an unrelated career fair event that featured the sheriff’s SWAT and K-9 handler presentation, along with the traffic motor unit, Abollo said. The career fair took place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., officials said.
