Brian Barefoot was appointed as chairman of the Indian River County school board Tuesday, replacing outgoing chairman Laura Zorc, schools spokeswoman Cristen Maddux said.

School board members nominated Barefoot, the former Indian River Shores mayor, to lead the group. Barefoot was sworn in Tuesday night, Maddux said.

Barefoot was elected to the school board District 5 during the August Primary Election, defeating Alla Kramer.

Barefoot will work with school board Vice-Chairman Teri L. Barenborg, and members Dr. Mara Schiff, Jacqueline Rosario and Dr. Peggy Jones. Jones was also elected to the school board during this year’s primary election, defeating Zorc.

Barefoot and Jones, former principal of Sebastian River High School, are both newcomers to the school board. The two started their new roles – which are four-year terms – on Tuesday.
