Man taken to hospital after fall from I-95 bridge

A man who authorities said may have laid injured for two days after falling 25 feet from a bridge is recovering after rescue crews retrieved him Thursday.

The unidentified man – in his 30’s – had a broken right arm and a broken right leg, Fellsmere Police Lt. Scott Newsom said. The man was taken to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Newsom said.

An update on his condition was not immediately available.

Indian River County deputies, fire rescue and Fellsmere police about 8:40 a.m. responded to reports of a man who fell from the Interstate 95 bridge, just south of the C-54 canal. St. Sebastian River State Park personnel found the man lying on a dirt road underneath the bridge near the Brevard and Indian River County border line, Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry said.

Police said the man appeared to be homeless and was carrying a backpack.

The man told authorities he fell from the bridge two days earlier, Newsom said. The man said he was from Oklahoma and was traveling on foot to Miami, according to police.

Fire rescue officials and deputies were not immediately available to comment. No further details were immediately available.
