Mona Lou (Hall) Shaw, 90, Vero Beach

Mona Lou (Hall) Shaw, 90, and longtime resident of Vero Beach, died on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and life-long member of the United Methodist Church. Mona lived her life serving the Lord and shared God’s love and promises with everyone.

Mona was born in Clearfield, Pa., on Dec. 4, 1929, and graduated from Clearfield High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Herbert W. Shaw in 1953, and welcomed their five children who became the focus of her life.

In 1967, Mona and Herb moved to Vero Beach. After moving to Florida, she worked for the Dales Manufacturing Company in Wabasso for over 20 years and then worked as the financial secretary for the First United Methodist Church in Vero Beach for 25 years.

Mona was a born-again Christian and referred to herself as a “dyed-in-the-wool” Methodist. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Vero Beach for over 50 years. She taught Sunday School for many years, led numerous Bible Studies, was an active member of United Methodist Women, was a member of the Sarah Circle, served on the FUMC Memorial Garden Committee and served as the Florida Annual Conference Lay Delegate.

Mona also served many years on the board of the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Vero Beach and was a member of the Circle of Love. She was honored and humbled in 2015, when she was awarded the Susanna Wesley Award, which recognizes women in service to Jesus Christ in the United Methodist Church.

Over the years, Mona pursued many creative activities, like oil painting, needlepoint, quilting, and painting furniture. She loved to decorate her home. She enjoyed singing, particularly hymns, and joined church cantatas when possible.

Mona loved to travel and made many international trips, visiting Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Morocco. Her favorite tours were the two she took to visit Israel. There she was deeply moved walking in the footsteps of Jesus.

In her later years, she found joy in simple things like sitting on her front porch, sharing events with family, playing Phase 10 and watching her beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A treasured memory was attending a Buccaneers game in person at age 88 – proclaiming herself “the Bucs oldest fan!”

Family and friends have given tribute to her “positive spirit, her love of the Lord, her ability to see good in everything and everyone, her laughter and joy in living.”

Mona was a wonderful blessing to her family. She was “Grammie” to many, many loved ones.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were so precious to her. Four children: Dan Shaw, Deborah Coyle, Dianne Shaw and Patricia Sherman; their spouses, Ruth Shaw, Al Coyle, Jimmy Trusty, Stephen Sherman and Carole Shaw Robinson. Mona cherished her grandchildren: Dylan Shaw, Ian Shaw, Derek Shaw, Amy Lee, Joe Shaw, Ben Coyle, Christopher Sherman, Michael Sherman, Daniel Sherman and spouses William Lee, Pam Shaw, and Jelithza Sherman. She adored her five great-grandchildren: Lilly Lee, Emma Kate Lee, Skyler Shaw, Taylor Preston and Rose Shaw. She is survived by her beloved nephews Mike Keeler and Patrick Keeler, their sons Jason Keeler, Tanner Keeler and Travis Keeler, spouses Terri Keeler and Jennifer Keeler, and their children Molly Keeler and Connor Keeler.

Mona is predeceased by her husband Herbert Wallace Shaw; her son Garry M. Shaw, her grandson David Sherman; her parents Laree and Lester Hall and her much loved sister, Donna Lee Keeler.

“Grammie” will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

There will be a memorial service held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
