INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies are searching for a shirtless man with heavily “distinctive” tattoos who indicated he had a knife before stealing an undisclosed amount of cash overnight from a gas station in south county.

The armed robbery occurred at 3 a.m. Wednesday at Cumberland Farms, 880 27th Avenue Southwest, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said. The man went to the clerk, indicated he had a knife and demanded cash from the register, sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said.

A knife was never seen, Flowers said. The clerk handed the money to the man.

Deputies think the man fled on foot eastbound from the store, Flowers said. There was no one else inside the store when the incident occurred.

Deputies said the man is very distinctive with multiple tattoos on his upper torso and arms. Anyone who knows the man’s identity should contact sheriff’s public safety dispatch at 772-978-6240.

Callers can also remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a reward of up to $3,000 by contacting Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-273-TIPS or tcwatch.org.

No further details were immediately available.
