Deputies: Man detained after traveling 80 mph in stolen vehicle

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An unidentified man who authorities said was traveling about 80 mph in a stolen truck was detained Thursday after a security company helped deputies track down the vehicle, authorities said.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office helicopter and K-9 units responded to the incident Thursday, Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. Deputies used a global positioning system provided by OnStar, a vehicle security company, to locate the white Dodge Dakota.

It was not immediately known if there were any injuries. The pickup truck was stolen from the beach side, Vero Beach Police spokesman Officer Dennis DeAcetis said.

Deputies responded to reports from OnStar of a stolen truck about 3 p.m. Thursday. The truck was traveling west on State Road 60 near 58th Avenue, not far from the Indian River Mall, Flowers said.

Deputies found the truck near Interstate 95, Flowers said. The driver spotted law enforcement and fled on foot.

It was unclear if there was anyone else inside the vehicle. Sheriff’s helicopters and K-9 deputies tracked the man and apprehended him shortly before 4 p.m., Flowers said.

Vero Beach police detectives were investigating the incident with help from deputies. More details were expected to be released Friday.
