VERO BEACH — A four-car crash on Indian River Boulevard that left several people hurt caused delays Wednesday afternoon.

The wreck happened at 1:21 p.m. Wednesday on northbound Indian River Boulevard, just south of the Barber Bridge, Vero Beach police spokesman Officer Brad Kmetz said. Kmetz said some people were taken to hospitals; details on the hospitals, number of patients and their conditions were not immediately available.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., the road was down to one lane from the Barber Bridge to Royal Palm Pointe. It was unclear when the lane would reopen.

Police told the public to avoid the area if possible.

Man charged in stabbing woman, requiring surgery

VERO BEACH — A 34-year-old man was jailed after a beating and stabbing that left a woman with severe injuries requiring surgery earlier this week, officers said. Police reviewed surveillance footage and described the incident as a vicious, unprovoked attack. "After speaking with medical staff, it was reported that (the victim) received treatment for four lacerations to the lower intestines, two lacerations to the colon and the removal of her spleen," Vero Beach police said in a report. Man charged in New Year’s Day stabbing that left 1 seriously hurt

VERO BEACH — A man was jailed after police said he stabbed another man following an argument over a seating table arrangement at a popular island eatery during a New Year's celebration. The wounded man was taken by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, officials said. Michael Anthony Gaudiani, 66, of Seagrape Lane, Vero Beach, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
